Dr. Jewell Winlock Hamilton Scholarship

The Dr. Jewell Winlock Hamilton Scholarship is funded and provided by the generous support of Dr. Jewell Winlock Hamilton. Dr. Jewell Hamilton is a native of Tuscaloosa, AL and the oldest daughter of the late Mr. Minor and Mrs. Annie Winlock. Her early childhood was spent in a family of six siblings. After attending school in Tuscaloosa and graduating from Druid High School, she attended Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama for two years as a Business Administration/Accounting major. Jewell transferred to Tennessee State University to complete her undergraduate degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, she moved to Southern California where she resided for 40 years. While there she earned a master’s degree in School Administration from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California and in 1990 she successfully completed the requirements and earned a doctoral degree in Public Administration from Laverne University, Laverne, California.

 Upon her return to Montgomery in 2003, Dr. Hamilton accepted a position as an Assistant Professor in Educational Foundation, Leadership and Technology in the College of Education at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama where she served from 2003-2008. She was responsible for teaching doctoral level classes and serving on doctoral level dissertation committees.

Dr. Hamilton’s professional affiliations include National Council Teachers of Mathematics, Phi Delta Kappa, Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS), Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEEE) and the National Middle School Association.

Her community involvement includes being a graduate of Class XXI Leadership Montgomery, One Montgomery, the Fortitude Foundation, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to the Alabama Ethics Commission, served from 2011-2014.

Currently Dr. Hamilton is retired from C & J Enterprises, LLC (Educational consultants responsible for designing and delivering unique, professional development services to school districts). The emphasis was on improvement of classroom instruction in mathematics for all students, providing in-service for potential teachers preparing to take the ETS Praxis examination and individual consultation to doctoral students concerning their research and dissertations.

Dr. Hamilton is currently married to Raymond Hamilton.

Purpose

The purpose of the Dr. Jewell Winlock Hamilton Scholarship is to provide two scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $2,000 (in the categories of leadership and academic) to students enrolled and attending Alabama State University (ASU).

  • The goal is to provide two scholarships that range from $1,500-$2,000 (1 leadership and 1 academic) to students enrolled and attending Alabama State University (ASU).
  • Scholarship awards will be awarded during the Fall Semester and Spring Semester based on the availability of funding.

Eligibility

  • 3.0 GPA or higher
  • ASU Freshman or current enrolled student
  • Previous scholarship recipients are not eligible to re-apply
  • Write an essay on why you should receive scholarship including your career goals and your major

Submission Deadline

The application submission deadline for Fall Semester awards is March 1st and November 1st for the Spring Semester annually. Award notifications are completed 30 days prior to the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters. Scholarship award amounts are announced based on availability of funds.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2-page essay on why you should receive the Dr. Jewell Winlock Hamilton Scholarship, the reason for choosing your major, and future career goals.
  • High School (Freshman) or college transcript
  • Two Letters of Recommendation from a school official (i.e. principal, teacher, or counselor) and faith-based leader (i.e. pastor, minister, etc. who has direct knowledge of your work ethic. Letter must be written on letterhead and signed by the writer.
  • Community Service Letter from an organization (on letterhead) verifying a minimum of ten (10) hours of community service.
  • Applications will be available during Summer and Fall semesters.
  • Must have verified community involvement on letterhead from the entity.
  • The Jewell Winlock Hamilton Scholarship Award is a one-time award and cannot be renewed.
